About us
The Maitland Region Suicide Prevention Network is a community based network that works to reduce the impact of suicide in the Maitland Region. We focus on suicide prevention, awareness and support.
Our activities
The network aims to reduce the impact of suicide through:
- Building collaboration and partnerships between service providers to more effectively assist those in need
- Raising community awareness through education programs in suicide prevention provided by members of the network
- Distributing of information and resources to the community as an information hub for beyondblue and the Black Dog Institute and as a member of Suicide Prevention Australia.
Activity highlight
Community Education Initiative
The purpose of the community education initiative is to raise awareness and develop skills in suicide prevention. We provide education programs that help front-line volunteers and community members identify people at risk of suicide. The training helps people recognize the risk factors to suicide and how they can help. As a result community members are equipped in suicide prevention and contribute to a suicide safer community.
The network members have presented at Rotary Clubs in the Maitland area on suicide prevention and were invited to speak at the Xstrata Coal Sustainable Development Forum and Annual Apprentices Gathering in 2009. A safeTALK was held in December 2009 with another planned for 22 September 2010. An Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) workshop will be held in Maitland on 19-20 July 2010 and another ASIST workshop is planned for April 2011.
