About us

The Wambool Suicide Memorial Service
The Wambool Suicide Memorial Service helps provide support, comfort and hope for families who have been bereaved by suicide.
Steps involved:
The Memorial Service was developed over 6 months. The Dubbo community and small business owners rallied to support the work of the committee and the event by sponsoring goods and volunteering their time.
- A written project plan was developed. Committee members volunteered to carry out chosen tasks.
- A suitable outdoor location by the water was identified and booked through City Council.
- Guest speakers were contacted an invited in writing.
- Musicians were arranged.
- Flyers and a programme for the event were printed.
- The community was invited to attend through a press release to local media newspapers and an invitation forwarded through all available networks.
- Businesses around town were contacted for sponsorship. A photographer volunteered his services.
- Equipment including marquees and a BBQ was organized.
- Counsellors were organized to be available on the day to assist families.
- On the day, a CD recording was made of all written information.
Community impact:
The Suicide Bereavement Memorial Day was held on a sunny June day on the banks of the Macquarie River in Dubbo. There was a good crowd of people in attendance. The feedback provided by those who came along was positive and strongly in favour of holding the event again. Those we spoke to said it has brought them some comfort and knowledge that they were not alone in their grief. The Network plans to hold the event again.
