A note from a colleague - 11 June 2010

Today's note is brought to you by Andrew Watson
Dear Friends,
Technology is ever advancing. The old ambit that technology is meant to set you free can be difficult to accept given that this technology can be even more complex. Are technology and technological solutions what they seem to be or are they a façade hidden in a functional base? Is an iPhone a means of communication or a glorified toy? The perception and the image can be very much distorted. In our modern world, the view that image is everything cannot be underestimated. Consider the challenges that confronted our Prime Minister in recent months. These challenges in many ways are being fuelled by aspects of image and perception; however, as Christians, we believe that we are created in the image of God. That cannot mean we are a façade or fake or simply an interpretation of other people's perceptions. In a fundamental way, being created in the image of God means we are the real thing.
A local Catholic college asked their senior students to describe their image of God. A common excerpt is below.
God is almighty, strong and powerful. I have not given God a face reflecting no race, as God has made man in his own image and man has many different faces and multitude of cultures. He is compassionate and merciful, at times needs to be witnessed. There is no background as God stands out above everything.
The image of God is described in words like strength, compassion and mercy. These in many ways reflect what is good and positive in people. Wesley Mission as a Christian mission should reflect on its self in God's Image and all that it does is a reflection of the intimate relationship God has with all His people.
Saint Catherine of Siena wrote:
Eternal Father, you said, "Let us make mankind in our image and likeness." Thus, you were willing to share with us your Own greatness. You gave us the intellect to share your truth. You gave us the wisdom to share your goodness. And you gave us the free will to love that which is true and just. Why did you dignify us? It was because you looked upon us and fell in love with us. It was love which first prompted you to create us; and it was love which caused you to share with us your truth and goodness. Out of the same love that caused you to create us, you have now sent your only Son to save us. He is your perfect image and likeness, and so through Him we can be restored to your image and likeness.
Each morning as we look at ourselves in the mirror what image do we see?
Warmly yours
