A note from Keith

6 August 2010

Dear Friends,

We don’t need reminding that we are in the midst of a Federal Election campaign.  For those of us who will have the opportunity and responsibility of voting on August 21, the choices are far from easy.

Like me, you may feel that we have become so centred on the leaders that we have not dug deeply enough in examining the real political issues upon which we must make our decision.  I confess to being sad that none of the major parties has displayed any marked sense of selflessness, but have been preoccupied with their own interests - or the interests of the constituencies they seek to represent.

This election is of immense importance for Australia.  All of us, consciously and subconsciously, need to recognise our obligation to be concerned for those around us.  We live in a culture that is dominated by consumption, obsession with celebrity and a fearful individualism.  The teaching of Jesus challenges all these aspects of life.  He warned us of the danger of materialism; displayed in his own life and death humility such as had never been seen before; and helped us to live life above the selfish priorities of individualism.

Here are a few questions worth asking of those canvassing for election:

  • What is your view of the family and what will you do to protect its importance in Australian life?
  • What is your view on late abortion and any potential ‘right to die’ legislation?
  • With an ageing population, what are your plans for providing a secure future for all?
  • What is your view on affordable housing – and tackling homelessness?
  • What for you is the key factor in addressing the issues of mental health in Australia?
  • Do you feel Australia is doing enough in response to The Millennium Development Goals?

I have only scratched the surface and fear we will not get to the questions that matter.  If you have the opportunity to put questions of Christian significance, then take it as a God-given opening.  We will have to live with the consequences of this election.

Gracious God, who has decreed that righteousness alone makes a nation great,
we ask you to move the hearts and wills of those who seek high office
that they may be led into that way which honours all people
and brings praise to your name.
Amen.

Warmly yours

As Superintendent and Friend,
