Barry and Mavis - A love story
Barry* was recently referred to the Extended Aged Care in the Home (EACH) program for high level care. He was being cared for by his wife, Mavis, who resided with him and was experiencing complex needs of her own. This situation was identified immediately as being an enormous problem as this couple were extremely co-dependent on each other and unable to attend to their daily living activities.
Moving one of them to a residential facility was completely out of the question as they insisted they were never to be parted. The couple had no immediate family as their son had passed away at an early age. They are visited once a month by a niece and nephew who have been shouldering much of the burden of care.
Wesley Mission's Extended Aged Care in the Home (EACH) Co-ordinator requested an assessment by the Aged Care Assessment Team and the wife is now receiving high level care through the EACH program.
As Barry and Mavis are now both receiving this high level support, it means that they will receive around the clock care, seven days a week, including nursing, physiotherapy, equipment and all the care that would be available to them if they were residents of a nursing home.
The difference the program has made to their lives has been enormous. Previously, they had not been out of their home for over twelve months and their living environment was so unclean, tenants in the building had complained. Their home is now sparkling, their finances closely monitored, and there is food in the fridge. They now have an extended family of carers who are spoiling them rotten and they were recently able to attend Christmas in July with Wesley’s Community Support Services Team. They are now able to be together in their own home with close friends.
