Fact sheet about bipolar disorder
A person who has bipolar disorder experiences extreme mood swings from excited highs to black lows. During their lives approximately two per cent of Australians are affected by bipolar disorder, previously known as manic depression.
Several factors can lead to the development of bipolar disorder, including the following:
Genetics
Bipolar disorder is frequently inherited from a parent.
Life events
Bipolar disorder can be triggered by stressful events such as moving house, changing jobs, experiencing abuse or the death of a loved one.
Health
Bipolar disorder is thought to be linked to abnormal levels of serotonin in the brain.
Drugs
The development of bipolar disorder has been linked to the use of illicit drugs.
Pregnancy
The challenges of being a new parent have been known to cause symptoms of bipolar disorder to develop.
Symptoms of an excited mood state
- having increased energy or overactivity
- racing thoughts and rapid speech
- sleeping problems
- increased sex drive.
Symptoms of a depressed mood state
- loss of interest in food or sex
- feeling irritable and moody
- feeling unmotivated
- wanting to be alone
- inability to cope with everyday stress
- loss of self-esteem
- sleeping problems.
Treatment program for bipolar disorder
Wesley Hospital Ashfield and Wesley Hospital Kogarah’s treatment programs for bipolar disorder combine medication and cognitive behavioural therapy, taking into account all aspects of life.
The aim of our in-patient and day patient program is to identify the factors that have contributed to the development of bipolar disorder, so that treatment can be targeted at areas where it is needed. The program includes full-day depression management programs for day patients and half-day mindfulness programs that can assist sufferers of bipolar disorder, whether they are in the depressed or manic phases.
We can help you develop an understanding of the triggers for bipolar disorder, and help manage the distress of an episode.
