Eating disorders

Two women sit and share a laughEating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are caused by a range of factors, including social pressures, psychological vulnerabilities and biological predisposition. If you or someone you know suffers from Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa it is important to seek help as early as possible as eating disorders can have serious physical and psychological consequences. The Wesley Eating Disorders Centre can help.

Treatment program for eating disorders

The Wesley Eating Disorders Centre consists of a specialised 12-bed in-patient unit and a day patient program which is held in a cottage within the grounds of Wesley Hospital Ashfield.

The Wesley Eating Disorders Centre offers an integrated treatment program. Initial treatment is within an in-patient setting with a high level of supervision and an intensive group program. A variety of psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioural and mindfulness-based therapies, are used to give patients the skills to assist with recovery.

The specialist multi-disciplinary team consists of nurses, dieticians, clinical psychologists, art and exercise therapists, physicians and psychiatrists. The small number of patients and high level of staffing allows patients to be cared for with expertise, care and compassion.

Post-treatment assistance for eating disorders

On discharge the therapy team will help with the transition back to day patient treatment by liaising with established therapists or linking the patient with appropriate follow-up.

We can also help you link up with external resources, and if you would like to learn more about Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa, we recommend further reading . You can also learn the answers to frequently asked questions and find more information in our fact sheet.

The program at Wesley Eating Disorders Centre was set up by the late Professor Peter Beumont in May 1998 and maintains the high standards and vision he held for the centre. Since that time we have been a leading eating disorders centre providing care to people in both Australia and New Zealand.

Our program director is Dr Naresh Mondraty who trained extensively with Professor Beumont at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
